Building a Foundation for Fundraising Success at NYU

When NYU's newly-formed development leadership team needed alignment and momentum, I designed a program that transformed their approach. By focusing on team culture, shared values, and individual empowerment, we created a foundation for both immediate engagement and long-term fundraising success.

Services used:
Leadership Advisory, Team Coaching, Team Retreat

"I am grateful to Shanna for helping our development team build a strong foundation for fundraising success and for advancing important conversations about our values and goals for the year ahead. Shanna listened closely to my goals and developed an interactive presentation that engaged the entire team to think deeply about how they can lead from where they are and have an impact on our organization. She also led a workshop with the managers to define our values and outline how we will measure success in the coming year."

– Roe Fellows, VP, Development, University Development & Alumni Relations, New York University

Opportunity

Roe Fellows was nearing the end of her first year as New York University's VP of Development and had just finished hiring her leadership team. Roe wanted to bring the team together to align around their annual goals, help her new hires integrate into the team, and start the year on a positive note.

Solution

Roe hired Shanna for a suite of leadership development programming that included:

  • An interactive workshop for her entire team of 90 that showed them how to “Lead from Where They Are” and influence and excel in their current role to grow themselves and the organization

  • Facilitated team-building to foster deeper connections and trust between team members

  • A workshop exclusively for Roe’s managers that focused on developing the shared values that would govern how they would lead the team going forward and become the foundation for their culture and fundraising success

Results

  • Through the interactive workshop the team begin making an impact immediately no matter what their role

  • The facilitated team-building made new hires feel part of the team and valued for their unique skills

  • They begin implementing their shared values in their annual planning for the new fiscal year

  • They started a monthly recognition program to showcase team strengths and contributions
